Pickstarter: Card Game “A Duel Betwixt Us” Offers Gentlemanly Violence

How many times have you wistfully stroked your handlebar mustache while sipping on finest, oak barrel-aged scotch and riding your penny-farthing, only to have another dapper gentleman unceremoniously cut you off at the roundabout? Gone are the days when you could demand gentlemanly satisfaction and engage in the sacred art of dueling; chances are you’d get arrested. There’s got to be a better way! Now, there is, thanks to two men, artist Laurence and designer Rob, and their new 2-player card game A Duel Betwixt Us. The game pits two players head-to-head in a battle to win the favor of maidens fair, attract sturdy men to join their cohort and engage in the “ancient and sacred art of violence.” Throw in plenty of mustaches, tailcoats, shivs and off-the-wall humor and you’ve got a recipe for success.

Described as a sort of Minecraft-meets-Magic: The Gathering-style affair, A Duel Betwixt Us is the kind of simple, but addictive fun that we look for in card games. Each player begins with 5 miners. On each turn, the player assigns an idle miner to either the copper, silver, or gold mines. Per the Kickstarter page, “One miner can dig out a single copper, whereas two are required to mine a silver and three for a gold.” These resources can then be used on strategic event cards, “nefarious tricks”, or can be spent to craft weapons and armor. At the end of the turn, the player can duel their nemesis to either win the favor of a maiden fair (accrue enough and you win the game) or to attract more miners to build up your thriving manliness-industrial complex.

Although it’s easy to feel mustache fatigue, given that everyone with an Etsy account is slapping the ubiquitous flavor savers on everything from tote bags to ride sharing services, A Duel Betwixt Us takes the 19th century aesthetic and injects it with much-needed humor, creativity and over the top violence. Case in point: One of the cards lets you cloak yourself in one of your miners, human shield-style, in order to protect your personage from dueling damage. I don’t know about you guys, but that’s the kind of world – imagined or otherwise – in which I want to live.

The Kickstarter for A Duel Betwixt Us runs until Thursday, August 29th, so you have plenty of time to pawn your unused monocles, cravats and top hats in order to make a donation to this patriarchal project. What do you think of the game? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. If I donate enough, will Colbie Smuthers arrive to a game and say “A gentleman’s agreement” while we answer “Huzzah!” as we shake hands

Are there plans to carry this AMAZING new product at Meltdown?
