Phil Lord & Chris Miller to Make Animated SPIDER-MAN Movie

If your Spider-Sense wasn’t already tingling after Marvel and Sony’s reported shortlist for the live-action Spider-Man reboot, then this news will make it go haywire. At CinemaCon, Sony chairman Tom Rothman announced that The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be writing, producing, and developing an animated Spider-Man feature film. The movie, which will exist outside the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to release on July 20, 2018.

This appropriately sums up the Internet’s reaction thus far:

In all seriousness, the prospect of Lord and Miller making an animated Spider-Man film is amazing, and a very smart move for the studio. Save for exceptions like Big Hero 6 and The Incredibles, animated superhero stories have primarily been the purview of television series and direct-to-DVD home video releases. Not only does this open up a whole other avenue for telling these stories, but it allows the filmmakers to tell literally any Spider-Man story of their choosing thanks to the the freedom offered by animation. “Maximum Carnage”? “Spider-Island”? “The Clone Saga”? Okay, hopefully not that last one, but you understand where I’m coming from.

The next live-action Spider-Man film swings into theaters on July 28, 2017. The animated feature will follow on July 20, 2018, with Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Matt Tolmach producing.
