Pez Candy is Getting an Animated Movie for Some Reason

If board games, theme park attractions, and emojis can be movies, I guess it’s not too far off base for candy to be the focus of an animated film. I guess. And that’s what’s happening with Pez candy. The delicious, if slightly chalky tablet-shaped candy is headed towards the big screen thanks to Envision Media Arts. The company is developing the film with screenwriter Cameron Fay (Brother in Laws) and producers Lee Nelson and David Buelow.

The premise of the Pez candy movie? Envision Media Arts didn’t reveal details, but the company’s co-founder Lee Nelson said, “Pez candy is beloved by children and adults alike. With Cameron Fay we’ve created a world unique to Pez and a story that will touch the hearts of many.” That’s a loaded description, but Nelson is right in that Pez is near and dear to the hearts of many (though attachment is usually about the collectible dispensers rather than the candy, unless you’re me and just buy the packs of the candy refills).

Speaking of the dispensers, that’s what could make the film work. Pez has several popular franchises in their pocket. They have Star Wars, Marvel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more. If they could bring those properties to the screen, they could create a fun sandbox to play in, sort of like what happened in The LEGO Movie. Of course, people actually play with LEGO bricks whereas Pez dispensers typically line shelves…

If you were going to choose a candy to be the subject of a film, which one would you choose? I feel like there’s a lot of potential for Hot Tamales. Share your picks with me in the comments.
