On Christmas, it will be exactly two years since Peter Capaldi stepped into his role as the Twelfth Doctor on Doctor Who. Capaldi was a stark departure from the much younger Doctors played by David Tennant and Matt Smith, but heâs won raves for his performance, particularly in the recently concluded ninth season. However, Capaldi is already hinting that the upcoming tenth season of Doctor Who may be his last.
âThis could be my final year,â said Capaldi during an interview with Telegraph. âItâs terrifying. I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. Thatâs my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there will come a day, inevitably, when youâll be saying goodbye.â
If Capaldi only stays for three seasons, that would be in line with the length of Tennant and Smith’s tenures, both of whom remained with Doctor Who for three full seasons. Of the modern Doctors in the revival Doctor Who series, only Christopher Eccleston departed after only a single season.
Capaldi also noted that he is recovering from a knee operation that was caused by the constant running that Doctor Who requires him to do.
âItâs the same operation Matt Smith had!âexclaimed Capaldi. âI took him for lunch the first time I met him and he was on crutches. I said, ‘Whatâs happened to you?â He said, ‘This f—— show, mate!â I never believed him â and now Iâve got exactly the same injury. You tend to twist your knee when youâre being chased by a monster and then you swivel around to present yourself to camera. Itâs the curse of the Doctorâ¦â
Capaldiâs next Doctor Who adventure, âThe Husbands of River Songâ will air on December 25.
