Patty Jenkins Now Set to Direct WONDER WOMAN Solo Film

Despite rumors surfacing this week that Angelina Jolie was being eyed to replace Michelle MacLaren as the director of the forthcoming Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot, after the Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad director left after having “creative differences” with the studio, it looks like the director of the Amazing Amazon’s big screen solo debut will instead be Patty Jenkins. Comic book movie fans might remember Jenkins’ name, since she was once attached to direct Thor: The Dark World for Marvel Studios. Jenkins’ film debut was the serial killer biopic Monster, which won Charlize Theron an Academy Award for Best Actress. She also has quite the TV resume, including the pilot episode of AMC’s The Killing. She’s also directed episodes of Arrested Development and Entourage.

Wonder Woman already has a release date of summer 2017, a few months before the Justice League movie hits theaters. Warner Bros. really didn’t have time to waste in the search for another director after MacLaren left the project, as a tentpole like this would take a long time in pre-production, and the release date is only two years away. If  the 43-year old Jenkins had been the director for Thor: The Dark World, she would have been the first female director for a superhero movie. As it turns out, with Wonder Woman coming out several years later, she’ll still be the first woman to direct a big budget superhero movie, which is a sad statement on just how few women are given the reins of big budget Hollywood movies.
