It’s been a while since Martin Landau and Barbara Bain have graced our screens as Commander John Koenig and Doctor Helena Russell stationed at Moonbase Alpha, but now Space: 1999 is coming back with a big bang, thanks to Archaia’s Space: 1999: Aftershock and Awe, coming out this Wednesday, Dec. 12th.
Based on the classic 1975 TV series, Aftershock and Awe is an original graphic novel set in the continuity of the show, which takes place in an alternate universe in which JFK was never assassinated and our space program fulfilled Newt Gingrich’s dream of building a permanent base on the Moon. Well, permanent until disaster, as it’s wont to do, strikes the moon base in the form of an atomic meltdown, which knocks the Moon out of orbit. Are you intrigued? Wicked cool! I remember SPACE:1999 from when I was a kid–the excerpt for the script was in an issue of a magazine Scholastic used to put out (we’d all get them at school). It and TREK (TOS) were the only SF on the tube in those days and I latched onto them like happy grim death.

I had the pleasure of meeting Martin Landau at last years Toronto FanExpo. I’m no autograph seeker or celebrity hound, and yet he was to be the first celebrity I have ever worked up the courage to actually meet. Anthony Daniels was nearby, berating one of his legions of fans who had somehow offended him (he has a legendary temper). Many other stars were busily attending their fans. Yet at this particular moment Mr. Landau had not one single person in his cue. I was shocked, saddened and slightly angered that he would be ignored, and went immediately to his table. He was incredibly gracious and sweet, and after enduring my bumbling awkward barrage of stupid questions, kindly signed an autographed photo (my first such treasure) and offered his hand in a farewell shake with a wide beaming smile. I walked away in a dreamy hero-worshiping daze. 🙂
