Paramount Sets Up Writers Rooms for G.I. JOE and MICRONAUTS Movies

Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro signaled their intent to create a Transformers Cinematic Universe in the Marvel Studios mold by assembling a writers room of established screenwriters to plan out the next ten years of Transformers movies. Now Paramount is ready to extend that approach to two of Hasbro’s other toy lines.

Akiva Goldsman has been named the supervisor of the writers rooms for G.I. Joe and Micronauts. It’s the same role that Goldsman had in the Transformers writers room, but it means that Goldsman will no longer be writing the fifth Transformers movie. The Transformers producers are now looking at Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum & Matt Holloway, and Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down) to collaborate on Transformers 5.

The purpose of the Paramount and Hasbro writers room is to recreate the TV writers room experience and exchange of ideas, in addition to identifying which characters and storylines could potentially spinoff into their own movies. For G.I. Joe, the silent ninja known as Snake Eyes would be a natural choice for a solo movie. Snake Eyes had one of the more interesting backstories in the franchise and he is intimately connected to the Arashikage ninja clan. But the G.I. Joe cast of characters is so large and diverse that multiple spinoffs may be the only way to get them all onscreen. Only two G.I. Joe live-action movies have been released to date.

As for the Micronauts…they’re going to be trickier. The Micronauts don’t have the deep mythology that Transformers and G.I. Joe can easily draw upon. The defunct Micronauts toyline just isn’t as popular as Hasbro’s other franchises, and it’s best known for its Marvel comic book series in the ‘80s. Conversely, that lack of awareness could also work in the Micronauts‘ favor if it allows the creative freedom to tell a great story. But as with everything, it will depend upon the execution.
