PACIFIC RIM UPRISING Featurette Offers a Peak at the New Kaiju

In the world of Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, humanity created monsters to fight monsters. But once the Kaiju were defeated, new Jaegers were built to fight each other. For the upcoming sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, director Steven S. DeKnight is stepping in to chronicle the return of the Kaiju and the rise of a new generation of Jaeger pilots, as led by John Boyega‘s Jake Pentecost. Over the weekend at Tokyo Comic Con, a brand new Pacific Rim Uprising video featurette teased the upgraded Jaeger models and the even deadlier breed of Kaiju that have emerged from beneath the sea.

Early in the video, we get a glimpse of Boyega’s Jake as he tries to deliver a rousing call to action in the shadow of his father from the first film, General Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). It’s tough to top “We’re canceling the apocalypse!” as a rallying cry, but it’s all on Jake to live up to his family’s legacy. Rinko Kikuchi is also featured in the video as she expresses how happy she is to reprise her role as Mako Mori, Jake’s adoptive older sister, who now heads up the Jaeger program.

Among the other tidbits in the video, Cailee Spaeny confirms that her character, Amara Namani, built her own Jaeger, which we get to see near the end. Additionally, the latest Kaiju are glimpsed as the cast promises some insane giant robot vs. monster fights that may even top the spectacle of the first film. More intriguingly, we even get to see the Jaeger’s battling each other, but without the context to explain why they’re fighting.

Pacific Rim Uprising will be unleashed in theaters on March 23, 2018
