If there’s one thing the Internet loves, it’s taking two characters from something they love and producing reams of artwork, stories, and ancillary content about them falling in love. In the world of Pacific Rim, one of the most popular ‘ships isn’t one you might expect–the oil-and-water scientist duo of Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman). The dynamic duo’s relationship has been nicknamed “Newmann” by Pacific Rim fans, inspiring over 2,000 fan fics on Archive of Our Own (and hundreds more elsewhere), as well as countless illustrations and GIF sets on the #Newmann hashtag on Tumblr. For many fans their bickering bromance is just the surface of a much-deeper romance between the characters. Now, with the characters poised to reunite on the big screen in Pacific Rim Uprising, fans are champing at the bit to see what further fuel their other favorite Science Bros will add to the fire.
But what do the actors who portray Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb think of the Internet’s obsession with their characters? To find out, we sent our ace reporter Erika Ishii to sit down with Charlie Day and Burn Gorman and ask them all about it at a Pacific Rim Uprising press day. “People have great taste,” Charle Day remarked. “We’ve seen many stories about the heroic guy and the heroic girl who find love at the end, but we’ve not seen many about the two oddball scientists who are forced to work together.” And as it turns out, you might not be alone in reading into that romantic subtext. But I won’t spoil what Charlie Day says for you here because his delivery in the video above is just…
Pacific Rim Uprising hits theaters on March 23.
