PACIFIC RIM Gets a Fan-Created Anime Opening Sequence

Shortly after Pacific Rim hit theaters in 2013, director Guillermo del Toro began talking about a potential Pacific Rim animated series that would fill in some of the backstory of the franchise. And while Pacific Rim 2 recently got back on track, it’s unclear if Pacific Rim is going to bring its brand of Kaiju-fighting Jaegers to animation.

Rather than waiting around for someone else to do it, animation student Jeremie Carreon created his own Pacific Rim anime opening sequence while using the classic style of Japanese mecha animated series. It’s even got the overly dramatic music and all of Gipsy Danger’s best features!

This isn’t a new video, as Carreon posted it three months ago. It’s making the rounds again this weekend because of our friends at ComingSoon.net. On his Vimeo page, Carreon cited the opening sequence from Voltes V as one of his influences for his creation.

Personally, it reminds me of Mazinger Z, another giant (if you’ll pardon the expression) of anime mecha which isn’t quite as well known in the U.S. as it used to be.

Last month, Legendary Pictures canceled the apocalypse and announced that former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight will direct Pacific Rim 2. Hopefully DeKnight and del Toro are still interested in bringing Pacific Rim to animation as well!
