Winter Is Coming, that much we know. But is Pacific Rim 2 happening? These days it seems like the answer depends on the very direction of the winds themselves. It has been officially delayed, which is far more preferable to having production enter the dreaded “indefinite hiatus” stage. The first Pacific Rim was an excellent original property by Guillermo del Toro, and it had pretty impressive box office numbers for a big-budget movie that didn’t begin its life as a comic book, novel, television show adaptation, or remake.
The premise for the first Pacific Rim, of course, was a very Westernized love story to two very Japanese subjects of entertainment: giant mechs, and giant kaiju monsters. After a long and drawn-out battle with the Kaiju, the very few human pilots of Jaegers still alive were left with nothing more than Jaeger spare parts. Assuming that the sequel sees the nations of the world start to reinvest in their own Jaeger programs, those Jaegers will need pilots. Enter this exciting tweet from del Toro Saturday morning:
Had lunch with Maisie Williams yesterday. Remarkable. Dammit- if PR2 happens, that girl is getting a Jaeger.

Let’s put aside the fact that del Toro said “if PR2 happens” for a moment. That “if” can eff off. Let’s instead focus on the fact that Guillermo had lunch with Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams! So, while, yes, it would be great to see Maisie piloting a Jaeger, this lunch could very well have other implications. Maisie has proven herself to be a pint-sized badass, and her battle prowess may land her on the big screen killing dudes as someone other than a movie version of Arya Stark.
We’d love to see Maisie as a Jaeger pilot, as we’re sure a few of you would, but we’d love a team-up with the actress and del Toro in any form we can have it. Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and the upcoming Crimson Peak all star young actresses, like Mia Wasikowska and Rinko Kikuchi giving really great performances. Adding Maisie to the mix is a real no-brainer.
Oh, and both Maisie and Guillermo were on the SDCC live edition of the Nerdist Podcast. Now, I’m not saying that the Nerdist Network is responsible for the two having crossed paths and pursuing further business ventures… but I’m not not saying it either.
What say you? Are you amped up for a Maisie/del Toro collaboration? Sound off below!
