Blizzard has treated Overwatch players to many animated shorts that expand the world of the game and explore the backstories of its characters. But that hasn’t stopped some fans from coming up with their own Overwatch animation. Take this new short by YouTube user Dillon Goo, for instance. The video puts the focus on Hanzo as he takes on Shimada clan bots. Hanzo’s birthright includes command of a spirit dragon that devastates any enemy in his path. However, Dillongoo’s story offers a different explanation for that power that borrows a page from another fan favorite video game: Pokémon.
We really love the intense action in this short. And it actually makes sense that Hanzo’s dragon spirit (or in this case, twin versions of Gyarados) would be pocket monsters. That’s also a good explanation for Genji’s appearance at the end, when he shows up with a Pokémon of his own. Of course, we also appreciate the quick cameo by Mercy in the opening seconds.
In Overwatch, Hanzo and Genji have a very enjoyable dynamic as brothers. In one of Overwatch‘s official animated shorts, fans learned that Hanzo was once honor-bound to kill Genji to fulfill his obligations to the Shimada clan, but it was that act of murderous intent that turned Hanzo away from his clan and towards a more redemptive path. It was a really well-done story, and you can watch it below.
