If you’re into anything remotely hilarious (and who isn’t?), you need to stop what you’re doing and check this out. ‘Orcs of New York’ is a Facebook page that parodies Brandon Stanton’s popular photo blog ‘Humans of New York,’ by photoshopping our favorite Lord of the Rings characters into familiar New York settings.
The page was created by Harry Aspinwall, an actor, filmmaker, and artist from Washington D.C., and so far it has over 12,000 ‘likes’ on Facebook. The ‘About’ section of the page states, “Giving a face to the Mordor diaspora of NY, one orc at a time.” Hmm, I think I can see why people are on board with this!
My favorite parts are the tongue-in-cheek captions, which ‘humanize’ the characters. The caption for this one was, “I’ve broken three phones in the past month. I think I might be cursed.”
“I grew up in a traditional household. I took weekly lessons in Black Speech, and my parents wanted me to get an engineering degree. I ended up with a BA in psych and visual art. They were pretty good about it.”
Are you sold yet?
Speaking of his reasoning for the project, Aspinwall said “Humans of New York has done so much for helping nurture understanding between different humans all over the world at this point. Having “humans” in the name made me want to take it one step further and bridge the gap to other anthropoid species. After all, we all have to get along.”
Be sure to check out the Gallery; there’s more where this came from. You can also follow Aspinwall on Twitter @harryaspinwall. Let us know what you think of his work in the comments below!
