Most of you reading this probably only know actress Lea DeLaria from her scene-stealing role as Carrie “Big Boo” Black on the hit series Orange is the New Black, which just dropped their third season last week on Netflix. In fact, Big Boo’s heartbreaking back story was finally revealed in the fourth episode of the season, “Finger in the Dyke”, and it’s one of the season’s best episodes, with DeLaria turning in what is quite possibly her best performance on the show to date.

But Lea Delaria has been around since the early ’90s, when she first made a splash as the first out LGBT comedian to be featured on late night television talk show, and since then has appeared acting in several movies, as well as in Broadway productions like The Rocky Horror Show. Primarily, though, she’s a singer, and over the past decade or so she has also released several jazz albums, the latest of which is House of David, an album of covers of twelve classic David Bowie tunes, all done in DeLaria’s usual jazzy style.

The entire House of David album was funded using PledgeMusic, and includes such classic Bowie tracks such as “Space Oddity”, “Rebel Rebel”, and “Let’s Dance”, not to mention Bowie’s 1980 hit “Fame,” which DeLaria gave a little impromptu performance of on Conan, with a little help from Conan himself, who provided the bass line. DeLaria also expressed her love for Bowie’s starring role in the 1980’s Jim Henson fantasy film Labyrinth as Jareth the Gobin King, a family film that maybe had maybe one minor element that wasn’t too terribly family friendly (I’ve got just two words for you: Moose Knuckle.)
