One Guy Plays a Song on 90 Different Instruments

It seems Mystery Guitar Man has been making waves on YouTube since the service came out because ultimately, his videos are innovative and show off his wide range of musical talents. He specializes in clips that feature layered audio of him creatively playing a song with an unconventional arrangement of instruments or with unconventional methods.

His latest viral clip is no different. This time he partnered with the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix to record a version of “Misirlou” on 90 different instruments. The tune is a traditional Eastern Mediterranean song, and you might have heard Dick Dale’s version in Pulp Fiction and Guitar Hero II.

We’re not going to sit here and identify every instrument Mystery Guitar Man plays in the video–we don’t know what all of them are–but he gets his hands on a lot of different stuff, from guitars to weird stringed things we’ve never seen before to drums to banjo to violin to things that only look like guitars to a pair of boots with bells on them.

Considering the musical firepower he had at his disposal, Mystery Guitar Man actually went kind of light on the instrumentation. The Musical Instrument Museum is home to over 6,000 different instruments. To be frank, if you caught us on the street and asked us to name as many different instruments as we could, we’d be fortunate to rattle off more than 20.

6,000 is an absolutely mind-blowing number, and we can’t blame Mystery Guitar Man for not trying them all.
