ONCE UPON A TIME’s Season Finale Had an Alternate Ending

Warning: spoilers ahead for the Season 3 finale of Once Upon a Time

As discussed earlier this week, a new character from Disney’s toy box swept into Storybrooke during the season three finale. Frozen’s Elsa is coming to Once Upon a Time, and she is likely to portray a villain. Show creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and hinted that Elsa wouldn’t be the only character from Frozen to appear in the series: “Yeah, we’d be disappointed if Elsa was the only one we saw, but we’re not quite ready yet to tell you who else we may encounter.” Kitsis later followed up with, “I would be let down if we don’t get to see Arendelle.”

Wonderful a surprise as it was, you’ve got to ask: was the season always going to end with Elsa? Yes and no. Kitsis and Horowitz saw a connection to their work when they first saw Frozen back in November. Kitsis told Time that Elsa is a natural fit for the series because she’s perceived as a villain but is really just misunderstood.

They had Elsa in the back of their minds and pitched it through the hierarchy of approval in February. After they got permission to go ahead with the storyline, it was all about keeping the icy reveal a secret. To that end, they employed one of the oldest and most effective tricks in the book: they scripted an alternate ending. Very few people got to learn about Elsa’s grand entrance.

Horowitz and Kitsis didn’t use a throwaway plot for the trick though. They won’t divulge what was in the scene because as they told Time, they’re “probably going to want to use” it according to Horowitz. Kitsis teased, “It’s another iconic Disney totem. We’ll leave it at that.”

Who or what could it be? Our sources say it’s the sorcerer’s hat from Fantasia. I’ll let that sink in.

Sorcerer Hat

The blue hat covered in gold stars and a moon is instantly recognizable and magical. It’s also incredibly powerful, and in the wrong hands, the object could be dangerous. Even if it came into Storybrooke without sorcerer Yen Sid, someone could find the hat and use it for nefarious purposes. Beyond that, what if the sorcerer’s hat worked like the Mad Hatter’s cap and served as portal between worlds? Having such an item on hand would make it possible for Once characters to jump from place to place for good or evil purposes.

Do you think the sorceror’s hat would come with Yen Sid or be used by someone else? Let us know in the comments.

Also I wouldn’t mind seeing Merlin or El Sid at some point either.

The Hat makes an appearance in the Dark Castle in Skin deep among the collection btw.  Just sayin’ 😉
it’s too the left of Regina at one point when she’s talking to Rumple.

  3. I’d much prefer the hat came with Dim Sum, Pad Thai, or Pho Tai.
