First OCEAN’S 8 Trailer Aims Its Heist at Anne Hathaway’s Necklace

Our first full trailer for Ocean’s 8 introduces us to Sandra Bullock‘s Debbie Ocean as she is just getting out of jail. None too long after tasting sweet freedom does this film’s equivalent of Danny Ocean (and an ostensible relative of Danny, per James Corden’s remark about Debbie’s whole family being con artists) rally her own second-in-command: Cate Blanchett’s amazing Lou, Debbie’s own version of Brad Pitt’s Rusty, for a heist operation at the annual Met Gala in New York. The goal: to steal a necklace, valued at around a cool $150 million, right off the neck of Anne Hathaway’s Daphne Kluger… who might, somehow, be in on the whole thing.

Per franchise tradition, Debbie rallies a team of skilled thieves with a wide-range of skills to pull off the job of a lifetime. On her roster are a jewel-forger played by Mindy Kaling, a sleight-of-hand artist played by rapper Awkwafina, and a computer hacker played by Rihanna, as well as Sarah Paulson and Helena Bonham Carter, whose specific skills have yet to be outlined. (That said, Carter looks to be some kind of a seamstress, so perhaps that’ll come into play in the film.)

The spirit and tone of the franchise clearly hasn’t changed, and Ocean’s 8 looks as exciting and fun as Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven trilogy, with the potential for huge twists and payoffs. And just like the other Ocean’s films, it appears there’s a second very personal job being pulled off within the larger one—Debbie Ocean looks to be out for revenge.
