A lot of us have some sort of holiday tradition that centers around watching the classic ballet The Nutcracker. Whether you’re generally a fan of ballet or not, there is just something magical about seeing Clara and her Nutcracker explore the worlds of the Land of Snow, the Land of Sweets, and the Land of Flowers every holiday season.
But in Disney’s newest holiday movie, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, we get to see a story in the Nutcracker’s world unlike any we’ve ever seen before. The movie is set to be more of an adaptation of the E.T.A. Hoffman classic novel than a retelling or sequel to the ballet, and from the looks of the second trailer released by Disney, it will be big on adventure and a bit of a darker journey into this fantastical world.
The story follows a young girl named Clara (Mackenzie Foy) as she travels into a fantastical world after following a magical thread given to her by her godfather, Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman). Though she initially travels into this parallel universe to discover a gift left to her by her mother, Clara soon joins forces with the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley) to protect this magical place from the oncoming threat of Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) and her evil minions.
The trailer gives off vibes that remind us of Disney’s 2010 live-action Alice in Wonderland, what with it being a familiar tale retold with a slightly darker story and a lot more adventuring. Whether you grew up loving the ballet or not, this movie looks like it will be a fun, magical adventure for this whole family this holiday season. And don’t worryâif you’re totally incapable of picturing any Nutcracker-related story without ballet, world-renowned ballet dancers Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin round out the cast. You can even see some of Copeland’s amazing ballet skills in the trailer.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms releases in theaters on November 2, 2018. Be sure to let us know what you think of the latest trailer in the comments!
