I think we all knew this was coming. Someone in North Korea saw the trailer for The Interview and now they’re out for blood.
The reclusive communist state vowed to retaliate if the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy which sees the duo enlisted by the CIA to assassinate leader Kim Jong-Un (Randall Park) is released.
This morning, a spokesman for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry warned âIf the U.S. administration connives at and patronizes the screening of the film, it will invite a strong and merciless countermeasure.â
The Interview is directed by Rogen and frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg from a script by Rogen, Goldberg, and co-writer Dan Sterling.
Is there precedent for an American movie where the heroes kill (or attempt to kill) a sitting head of state? I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I think we all knew that North Korea wouldn’t take the (comedic) assassination of its leader well.
The film’s premise falls inline with the decades of propaganda North Korea has disseminated internally, casting the U.S. as a vicious invading force, ready to strike the North at any minute. Over the years, they’ve made very public shows of force including a failed rocket launch in 2012 and raising tensions with its neighbors in the South earlier this year after lobbing hundreds of artillery shells at occupied islands.
No word on whether Sony – who’s releasing The Interview here in the States – plans to alter the launch of the film in any way. Similarly Rogen and Franco have yet to offer any statements on North Korea’s protest.

I think it’s perfectly fine, as the North Korean government put out that simulation of a nuc destroying NYC last year on their news or whatever. So I see no problem with this movie. In the words of Eric Matthews (Boy Meets World): “Life’s tough get a helmet!”

Leslie Neilson went after a bunch of US hating leaders. My man Frank Dreben of Police Squad kicked some anti-American ass!
The Hot Shots series went after Saddam or Qaddafi I think.
Didn’t Matt Stone and Trey Parker do something like this in a movie once?
yeah, it wasnt the same premise but they fucked kim jon in “Team America”, but i gues that wasnt a “mainstream movie”
This is probably the biggest overreaction I’ve ever seen. It’s so bizarre it looks like it came strait out of Dr. Strangelove.
“Is there precedent for an American movie where the heroes kill (or attempt to kill) a sitting head of state?” Malaysian Prime Minister – Zoolander
You mean the Claymation Prime Minister?
No. It was the prime minister of Milk of Propecia
“Is there precedent for an American movie where the heroes kill (or attempt to kill) a sitting head of state?”
Hot Shots Part Deux – They attempt to kill Saddam.
“Is there precedent for an American movie where the heroes kill (or attempt to kill) a sitting head of state?” =======> Inglourious Basterds
That was a peeps piece and therefore not applicable here.
*period
I didn’t know that movie was so old.
“it will invite a strong and merciless countermeasure.”In other words, an influx of bad PRK movies starring Kim Jong-Un into the US.
You smell that? That is a BRILLIANT Marketing Campaign. Nobody in N.Korea Gives a crap, and Sony has probably already sent “Dear Leader” a Screener copy of it!
Hot Shots dropped a bomb literally on top of Sadam
Team America killed Kim Jong-Il… but Dear Leader did shoot Alec Baldwin.
Matt..DAE-mon!
