Noelle Stevenson to Revive RUNAWAYS for Marvel’s SECRET WARS

This May will see the Multi-verse shattering event Secret Wars leave its mark on Marvel Comics. Every universe of the extended Marvel Comics catalog will be involved as events from Avengers and New Avengers will see them collide and create a Battleworld where the future of Marvel will be decided. This concept, which many of have compared to DC’s Crisis On Infinite Earths, means a return of many famous events and characters from the entirety of Marvel’s long history in comics.

Marvel has had plenty of stories and events in the past fifteen years that have made an impact on the company and the industry as a whole. One that really set itself apart was the 2003 series Runaways by Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona. The series, which ran for about five years, told the story of a group of teenagers who discover they are the offspring of super villains and band together to battle against the evil their parents had created. The series was a huge hit with fans, enough so to save it from a hiatus back in 2004, and allow it to run for several more years.

Marvel has announced that Secret Wars will be the perfect springboard to introduce Runaways back into the fold of stories effected by the universal-collision events. A series following the Runaways as teenage citizens of Battleworld will premiere in June. It will be written by Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes) and art will be provided by Sanford Greene (Uncanny Avengers).

Stevenson refers to her Runaways as “The Breakfast Club” citing the reference in regard to them being “a group who wouldn’t necessarily choose to hang out with each other under normal circumstances — and actually outright hate each other in a few cases.” This iteration will see several powerful teens from the Marvel universes attending school on Batteworld, only to discover their headmaster is in fact a supervillain. While not far from Vaughn’s original concept, it offers enough change to feel fresh. With the backdrop of Battleworld, it seems they will have a lot of places to go with the story.

Be on the lookout for the title in June, and let us know what you think of the new title for Secret Wars!
