It doesn’t seem like Joss Whedon’s Firefly will be rebooted in this galaxy anytime soon, but if you’re craving more of that world, Loot Crate has you covered. The subscription service that delivers geeky merchandise to thousands of people every month just released The Verse, a 16 minute short film set in the world of Firefly. Shiny!
The fan-made film features a new crew on a Serenity-esque transport ship called Overland, and the dialogue and tone feel as familiar as a cozy blanket. Even though they have different names, the members of the crew are clearly based on their counterparts on Serenity. The humor and delivery of lines is close to something you’d see in the television series, and in this case, it works.
See for yourself – feel free to put on your most cunning Jayne hat and sing the Firefly theme song before pressing play:
The Verse was written for fans and by fans. Quantum Mechanix even helped make models and provided screen accurate props to make the space-western environment look as authentic as possible. They nailed it because all I want to do after watching the short is to sit on my couch and marathon Firefly. Again.
The short stars Ryan Caldwell (Bret Hunter), Jennifer Wenger (Caroline Stack), Zack Finfrock (Rusty Duvall), Peter Weidman (Travis Sandspur), Tybee Diskin (Maribelle Crawford), Alex Marshall-Brown (Annie Whitehall), Ewan Chung (Jon Zhou), and Vic Mignogna (Commodore Woodruff). It was produced and directed by Julian Higgins.

Shiny π
awesome, i want more of that π
Would have preferred it Mignogna wasn’t in it
Darn right, the right flavor that, right attitude. Fine job all the way around.
Absolutely, freaking awesome! You guys nailed it.
More please!
Absolutely nailed it. Definitely time for a marathon rewatch of the original. How do we get them to make more of these?
I’d watch another…
“We got a reputation around here best left behind.” felt like a line that could have been lifted from the original show. Great piece of fan work.
Loved this! Please let some nerdy tv exec see this and make it a thing!
Maybe Fox would be smart this time around.
This was good, I could get into this especially as a Browncoat…
Ya I enjoyed this. Would love something regular to be made out it- how great would it be for The Verse to cameo some of the original Firefly cast in an episode?!
Most enjoyable. This is simple proof that the ‘Verse can host more than one crew. Well done!
Please please please let this become a thing! Love the new crew dynamic, and that they didn’t follow firefly to an exact. Browncoats live on!
… FROM SUCKING”
-The title.
“To be fair, you’re worth more alive than dead. To be unfair, I hate you.” That cracked me up. These characters are promising, and while it definitely teetered towards cheesy at times, I still found it fun and engaging. I’d love to see more!
WOW!! That was hella fun! I hope like heck they make some more. π
Gorram awesome.
SHINY. Ill take some more please!
Looked great but perhaps trying a bit too hard to mimic the real deal – always going to come up short in that case. Maybe a fresh take on the ‘Verse and I’d be hooked.
enjoyed this shortβ¦β¦.melancholy for firefly. hope to see more in the near future.
I enjoyed this, and would definitely watch it regularly should it be expanded upon!
I actually really enjoyed this. I really hope they decide to make more, or even a monthly series of shorts. Just GIMME GORRAM IT!
Cringy, but now all I want to do is watch the series over and over and over again.
Really fun, with a great Firefly flavour, cool visuals and characters to build on. Left me wanting more, with stronger writing this could satisfy my cravings.
Vic Mignogna in the show automatically vetoes it for me. I’ve have several interactions with the man and none of them have been pleasant. He’s the reason I couldn’t enjoy the fan-made Star Trek series either.
Not bad, they need to keep them coming.
SHINY!
This was awesome, I wish there would be a firefly reboot!!!
I’d love to see the verse as a series. they really need to do more of these.
I second the motion – a series would be cool!
Third end
That was shiney! I want more!!
