Nintendo Reveals Labo DIY Cardboard Accessories For the Switch

The first year of the Switch proved to be extremely successful for Nintendo, with at least two instant classics (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey) as well as 10 million consoles sold to date. To kick off the second year of the Switch, Nintendo is unveiling Labo, its next initiative, and the future is cardboard! Nintendo Labo is a series of accessories that can be easily put together with the Switch itself to create several different objects, including playable pianos, fishing rods, and more. The first video of the Labo kits offers a few more enticing glimpses of what the new initiative has to offer.

Each Labo kit will be comprised of pre-made cardboard accessories that require some assembly, but they can be used with the Switch to make Nintendo’s new Toy-Cons. For example, the first Labo Variety kit will allow players to make two RC racers, a fishing rod, a house, a motorbike, and a piano. The Switch will then act as a controller for the finished creation and add the gameplay elements as well. Additionally, a Labo Robot kit will let players make their own cardboard automaton, which can be moved and controlled by the Switch.

The Labo Variety kit will be priced at $69.99, while the Robot kit will be slightly higher at $79.99. For fans who want to make their own creations, Nintendo will also offer a customization set that features two stencil sheets, two rolls of tape and two sticker sheets. The possibilities for Labo are intriguing, because it may invite fans to truly unleash their imaginations with these relatively affordable accessories. We’re very eager to see what happens when Labo is released on April 20.
