Nintendo Names Tatsumi Kimishima as New President for 1 Year

Nintendo has announced that Tatsumi Kimishima will now lead the famous gaming company as the new President, effective this Wednesday. The term of his presidency will last for one year according to a Japanese paper’s interview with Kimishima, who also stated he was left no instructions about running the company. This news comes two months after the tragic loss of the legendary Satoru Iwata.

Kimishima, who is now 65 years of age, has been a part of Nintendo for a while now, serving different roles throughout the years. He was the chief financial officer of The Pokémon Company Inc. before becoming the president of Nintendo of America in 2002. On June of 2013, Kimishima became general manager of the corporate analysis and administration division, managing director, and manager of the general affairs division. He also has over 20 years of experience as a banker, which should prove useful when dealing with the business side of the things.

Wii developer Genyo Takeda and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will now also be considered “Fellows,’  named the Technology Fellow and Creative Fellow, respectively. These new roles are in addition to their current posts, and as for what the new title entails, Nintendo defines the post on their documents as “an individual selected from among the Representative Directors who has advanced knowledge and extensive experience, and holds the role of providing advice and guidance regarding organizational operations in a specialized area.” Keeping Miyamoto on the creative end of things is an appropriate, strategic move. I have no doubt that he could run the company, but I’d much rather he put all his efforts into creating characters and worlds; that’s where his talent shines the brightest.

The Big N is in a state of transition, the Wii U has proven to be a difficult sell, the company is delving into the mobile realm thanks to their partnership with DeNA, and a new console is in the horizon. From the sounds of it, Kimishima has a lot on his plate, but all the right qualifications
