Nicole Kidman Joins TOP OF THE LAKE for Season 2

Exciting news for Top of the Lake fans! And really, anyone who likes good acting with their television.

Director Jane Campion has confirmed that Australian powerhouse Nicole Kidman will be joining the cast for season two. She didn’t give a lot of inside information, saying only, “Nicole will be in season two. I am working on the script, and I have a role for her.” Kidman was also characteristically tight-lipped, adding only that she likes playing “odd people living odd lives.” If that’s a clue, we’ll take it.

Kidman and Campion have collaborated before, on The Portrait of a Lady in 1996, and then the 2003 thriller In the Cut, which Kidman didn’t star in, but she produced.

Filming for Top of the Lake starts on location in Sydney, Australia (my hometown!) in December, where Detective Robin Griffin (the wonderful Elizabeth Moss) is working on a new case. As fans will remember, the first season was a whirlwind of a success, despite the heavy subject matter: disappearance of a pregnant twelve year old girl in New Zealand. It debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and found a natural home on the Sundance Channel. Since then, the show has been nominated for a slew of Emmy’s – eight to be exact – and Adam Arkapaw won one for Outstanding Cinematography.

No word yet on a premiere date for season two, but stay tuned and we’ll report on more news as soon as humanly possible.
