New X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Set Photo Teases STORM’S Origins

The deluge of images from next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse continues, and as usual, they’re straight from director Bryan Singer’s Instagram account. This time, he’s showing us a set standing in for the streets of Cairo, Egypt, looking very much demolished. Of course, longtime X-Men comics fans know that Cairo is an important location in mutant lore, as it was on the streets of Cairo that a young Charles Xavier first encountered Ororo Munroe, the future Storm, as a young girl. This was long before she would become an X-Man, when she was a street thief and working under the employ of evil mutant psychic Amahl Farouk, better known as the Shadow King.

Did Storm herself do all the damage in the picture below? We know from recent reveals in Entertainment Weekly as well as the Apocalypse Comic-Con panel that Storm, now played by Alexandra Shipp, will at least initially be on the side of the bad guys as one of Apocaylpse’s Four Horsemen. In the comics, Xavier formed the X-Men as a direct response to what he saw as the impending global threat of the Shadow King, and so it seems logical that the new movie will replace the Shadow King with Apocalypse as the villain who brings the X-Men together. This totally make sense, because Apocalypse quickly overtook Shadow King as a principal X-Men villain, leaving only the hardcore fans even remembering who the Shadow King is (which is too bad, because Shadow King was kind of cool).
