Twenty one years after its release, the first Ghost in the Shell animated adaptation is still considered to be one of the all-time great anime movies. It’s unique visual style has also proven to be extremely influential in both Japan and America. Next year, director Rupert Sanders will unveil an American adaptation of Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johannson in the lead as the Major. Earlier this month, we were wowed by the first trailer from that film, but now someone has gone the extra mile to compare that footage to the original anime that inspired it.
IGN has posted a video that runs footage from the first Ghost in the Shell anime and a bit of footage from the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series and matches the scenes from the live-action trailer almost shot-for shot. It’s a little annoying that the new trailer only plays in a small corner of the video instead full size side-by-side with the classic clips. But the video made its point. Sanders and his cinematic team seem to have gone out of their way to recreate some of the most iconic moments from Ghost in the Shell. It’s impressive, to say the least.
Of course, it’s far too early to judge the quality of the new Ghost in the Shell film from a trailer that is barely over two minutes long. But we appreciate the effort, and any movie that dares to have those crazy anime hairstyles is gonna get a hat tip from us!
Ghost in the Shell will hit theaters on March 31, 2017.
