New Video Checks BATTLEFIELD 1’s Trailer for Accuracy

This fall, EA DICE’s Battlefield 1 is taking gamers to the war to end all wars: World War I! Unlike World War II, the First World War has been seldom explored in gaming even though it was a global conflict on a previously unimaginable scale.

The recently released Battlefield 1 trailer has been a big hit on YouTube and for some gamers, it may be their first exposure to the WWI era. Via Kotaku, the popular YouTube show The Great War (which covers the war in week-by-week detail from beginning to end) has examined Battlefield 1’s trailer for accuracy. And while The Great War writer and host Indy Neidell can explain some of the apparent inconsistencies, there are details that even he can’t reconcile with the historical facts.

Battlefield 1 Body armor

For example, Neidell takes issue with the German body armor seen in this video at the 9:12 mark. Neidell dismissed it as “ridiculous,” while noting that the body armor of the era was much clunkier and heavier than the trailer suggests.

However, some of the apparent mistakes in the trailer may not be mistakes at all. According to the host, it was a common practice for soldiers to incorporate weapons taken from the other side, which may be why some of the characters in the trailer are carrying guns and explosives more commonly associated with their enemies. Neidell also touches upon some of WWI’s legendary figures including the Red Baron and Lawrence of Arabia, neither of whom directly appears in the trailer–though Battlefield 1 will apparently be incorporating their famous theaters of war into the actual game.

You can find more videos from The Great War on the show’s YouTube channel. Battlefield 1 will be released on October 21 for PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4.
