There’s a lot of cool, nerdy stuff to look forward to in 2017. Khaleesi finally coming to Westeros in Game of Thrones, Wonder Woman finally getting a movie, and Luke Skywalker actually speaking lines in Star Wars: Episode VIII spring to mind. But if you’re me, the seismic pop culture event of next year is long awaited return of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks. After a second season cliffhanger that made my teenage self throw a shoe at the TV back in 1991, loyal viewers will finally find out what happens to Special Agent Dale Cooper and the rest of the townsfolks of that bizarre, little town in the Pacific Northwest.
After 25 years, Twin Peaks will return to Showtime with most of the original surviving cast intact, with original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost returning as well. We still don’t know how many episodes and when exactly the show will start, although rumor has it the show will be 18 episodes long, and debut sometime around May. And judging by the latest teaser dropped by Showtime (via Pitchfork), we know that one other vital ingredient is coming back to Twin Peaks as well — original series composer Angelo Badalamenti, whose music for the original series helped define it in the public consciousness as much as donuts and cherry pie. The teaser is brief, and shows Badalamenti himself playing “Laura Palmer’s Theme” on the keyboard over footage of the forest. Well, no surprise that the forest will play a key role in Twin Peaks, but judging by the prominent image we then see of murdered homecomig queen Laura Palmer’s photo, the teenage victim at the center of the original series will still play a key role in the proceedings on the new show as well (and she will be played once again by actress Sheryl Lee).
Although we still have a bit to wait for the new show, before the new series drops next year, series co-creator Mark Frost has a new book coming out called The Secret History of Twin Peaks, which is going to set the stage for the upcoming third season of the show. The book hits on October 18.
