The Witcher is getting another shot at the big screen. The Sean Daniel Company has announced a new film adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowskiâs Witcher novels and short stories which inspired the popular video game series, including the recently released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Grimm and Chicago Fire writer Thania St. John will write the script for The Witcher, which be âbased on themesâ from âThe Witcherâ and âLesser Evilâ short stories. The lead character of The Witcher will be Geralt, a monster hunter for hire who transverses the worlds of men and beasts. Because of his training and mutations, Geralt has nearly superhuman physical and mental abilities. His pale skin and white hair have also earned Geralt the nickname âthe White Wolf.â
Tomasz BagiÅski has signed on to direct The Witcher feature film — he previously directed the opening cinematic sequences for the first two games in The Witcher series. There are ambitious plans in place to use the new movie as a springboard for both sequels and a television series. The Witcher was previously adapted into a Polish film in 2001, with a TV series following in 2002. The Witcher TV series (known as The Hexer in English) ran only 13 episodes.
The Witcher movie is tentatively scheduled to be released in 2017.
