New STAR WARS Trilogy Next Chapter of Skywalker Family Saga

It was Luke Skywalker’s story that was the focus of the first Star Wars trilogy. The prequels were about his father Anakin’s descent to the dark side. And now we know that the third and newest Star Wars trilogy will again be a Skywalker story, because Lucasfilm has confirmed that the saga of the universe’s most notorious family will continue forward.

Kathleen Kennedy, head of Lucasfilm and one of the producers for the upcoming Star Wars trilogy and Han Solo movie, said that the new films being produced can be separated into two categories: saga and anthology. She specified that the saga films are the ones that “focus on the family saga” and follow the “linear narrative that connects to the previous six” movies. So while the Han Solo movie will be in the Star Wars universe, it’s not part of the grander Skywalker family story of the main movies. The anthology films will “offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres” in that world.

It has been speculated that The Force Awakens would be a continuation from Episodes I-VI, but now we know definitively that Episode VII, set thirty years after Return of the Jedi, will be the next chapter in the Skywalker family’s saga. Which means we can start to delve further into our theories. That Rey sure does look comfortable on that speeder, doesn’t she? Maybe BB-8 is adopted?

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens opens on December 18, and it will be a family affair for generations, both in the audience and on the screen.
