After the thing that happened in the series four premiere of Sherlock, what could be next? I have a tease for the next episode in today’s TV-Cap, some comments about said thing from Steven Moffat, news about the Twin Peaks revival’s potential debut at Sundance, and more. Let’s dive in:
Dangerous Business. This tease for the second episode of Sherlock’s fourth season is spoiler-free in regards to the big event I mentioned above. The look at “The Lying Detective” is all about Toby Jones’ character Culverton Smith making an impression. He is, as Sherlock says, a despicable human being. The synopsis: “Sherlock faces perhaps the most chilling enemy of his long career: the powerful and seemingly unassailable Culverton Smith – a man with a very dark secret indeed.” The episode will air on January 8.
Mark Your Calendar. Bates Motel’s upcoming fifth season will be its last, and we have a return date for the show. The final season will premiere on A&E on February 20. [A.V. Club]
On the Flip Side… On the renewal side of things, Amazon has picked up more The Man in the High Castle. The third season will feature a new showrunner and executive producer: Eric Overmyer. [IGN]
Wait a Minute. The CW’s line-up is currently enjoying a midseason break, but everything will return towards the end of the month. Arrow is back on January 25, and a trailer for the episode has an interesting twist involving one Laurel Lance… or is it? Seems like Black Siren is coming to Star City. [EW]
Meg on TV. According to Variety, Meg Ryan has joined a comedy in development at Epix. She’d be starring in a half-hour series adaptation of Brad Hall’s short film Picture Paris. The series would have the same title and would follow “a suburban empty-nester who heads to Paris with her husband, only to find the trip isn’t quite the dream she anticipated.” [Variety]
A Growing Cast. BBC America’s Orphan Black has one more season to go, and they’re filling out the ranks. They announced cast additions in a recent press release, so let’s run them down: “Joining the cast this season is Elyse Levesque as Detective Engers, a dirty Neolution cop who is a true believer; Andrew Moodie as Mr. Frontenac, Rachel’s new mysterious consultant; Simu Liu as Mr. Mitchell, Kira’s new homeroom teacher; Jenessa Grant as Mud, an eclectic young islander; and Stephen McHattie as P.T. Westmoreland, the mythical 170-year-old founder of Neolution.”

Festival Premiere? Take all of this with a big ol’ grain of salt, but Deadline is reporting discussions are happening about Twin Peaks going to the Sundance Film Festival. The revival is set to debut on Showtime in early 2017, but there could be a surprise screening at Sundance later this month. Showtime denied to Deadline that the series would be previewed at the festival. [Deadline]

No Games. The Sherlock premiere featured a huge loss with the death of Mary. Showrunner Steven Moffat talked to Entertainment Weekly about why it had to happen. He said, “Sherlock Holmes is about Sherlock and Dr. Watson, and it’s always going to come back to that — always always always. They had fun making it a trio, but it doesn’t work long-term. Mary was always going to go, and we were always going to get back to the two blokes.” Huh. Can’t say that I’m a fan of her being used as a plot device. You can read Moffat’s full comments at EW.
