New SHERLOCK Christmas Special Trailer is Big on Vague Mystery

OK, listen: I am as excited as the next Sherlock obsessive about Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman‘s return to Steven Moffat’s vision of the detective duo. But the trailer for the Christmas Special has more vague clips than Mad Men’s next-week teasers. We already knew there was Victorian garb and a complementary setting to boot, but: what? Why? And what’s with all the ominous talking about creating himself and setting a stage? DAMNIT, SHERLOCK, WE NEED ANSWERS.

First of all, there’s still no premiere date for it. The PBS site only says “coming soon-ish to MASTERPIECE on PBS,” which is hilarious bizarre for something as big as this (especially if it’s supposed to be a Christmas Special—shouldn’t it then premiere on December 25?!). But even more curious are all the things Sherlock says over the course of the self-referential, meta 90 seconds.

“The stage is set, the curtain rises, we are ready to begin.” “We all have a past, Watson. Ghosts: they’re the shadow that defines our every sunny day.” “Every war has a suicide mission and make no mistake this is war.” “Oh Watson, nothing’s made me. I made me.” “I have to finish this.” Uh, whatchu gettin’ at, Sherl-y? But like, really though.

THE MYSTERY! THE INTRIGUE! GAHHHHH.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see—though who knows how long that’ll be, eh? Let us know your theories in the comments.
