THE NEW MUTANTS Director Hints At the Future of Franchise, Teases New Characters

Earlier this week, The New Mutants‘ first teaser trailer offered a look at a different side of the X-Men movie universe. Director Josh Boone has essentially made a superhero horror film with the classic New Mutants characters, which does have a basis in the comics. In a new interview, Boone not only cited the Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz New Mutants run as his primary inspiration for the movie, he also indicated more horror stories are ahead if the film gets any sequels.

While speaking with IGN, Boone said that any follow up films to The New Mutants “are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies.” He added that the first film “is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie.” Boone also indicated that The New Mutants is set during the present day, and specifically named two characters that he intends to bring into the possible sequel: Karma and Warlock.

That’s Karma, a.k.a. Xi’an Coy Manh, and she has the ability to project her mind into the bodies of other people and essentially possess them. In The New Mutants comic, Karma was herself possessed by the Shadow King, the primary villain from the Legion TV series. That story could easily be adapted for a potential sequel.

And this is Warlock, a member of the mechanical race known as the Technarchy. If Warlock is coming down the line, that suggests a future sequel could be a horror tinged take on the invasion of Warlock’s father, Magus. The Technarchy has the ability to infect living beings with the techno-organic transmode virus, which is actually the reason that Cable has a cybernetic arm and eye. As drawn by Sienkiewicz, the infection of the transmode virus was nightmare fuel, and thus perfect for a darker take on the source material.

Boone also lightly touched upon The New Mutants‘ connection to the other X-Men related movies. “I can just say it is connected to and a part of the X-Men universe, and will continue to be a part of the X-Men universe and will be a part of that as it opens up in the next movies and all that.”
