THE NEW MUTANTS’ First Trailer Brings Horror to the X-MEN Movieverse

With the upcoming theatrical adaptation of The New Mutants, it seems as though director Josh Boone is going in a very different direction from what Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod laid out when the introduced the characters to the Marvel universe. In fact, it’s not clear if this cinematic incarnation of the team has any ties to the X-Men at all, and if the first trailer is any indication, they’ll have to defeat their own demons before they can even think about saving the world.

Boone cast a lot of familiar faces for this movie, including The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin a.k.a. Mahik, a mutant with the ability to teleport and some working history as a demonic sorceress, Game of ThronesMaisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, a young girl who can transform into a werewolf, Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, a mutant who can fly like a rocket, and Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa, a solar-powered mutant better known as Sunspot.

Each of the New Mutants has their moments in the trailer, but the spotlight clearly falls on the team’s leader and the comic series’ main character Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, played by Blu Hunt. Mirage’s role in the film will likely involve her connection to a malevolent entity known as the Demon Bear; while we don’t get a direct glimpse of this creature in the trailer, its presence is clearly felt.

The New Mutants will open on Friday, April 13.
