This week, the battle for Harlem’s soul begins as Marvel and Netflix drop the first season of Luke Cage, and Mike Colter‘s title character is ready to step up and be a hero.
Netflix has dropped a new extended trailer for Luke Cage that establishes how and why Cage will find himself in conflict with Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, the man who controls the criminal underworld in Harlem. In what appears to be an early moment from the series, Cage uses his indestructible skin as a human shield for his friend during a shooting, which inadvertently exposes his powers to his friends and the cops. For better or worse, Cage’s days of hiding in the shadows are over.
The new trailer offers an expanded look at the cast of the series, especially the women in Cage’s life. We finally get to see Misty Knight demonstrate her own heroic side while Cage gets closer to Claire Temple, who briefly mentions their first encounter during the Jessica Jones season finale. However, Alfre Woodard’s Mariah Dillard is no friend to Cage, as she gets one of the most chilling lines in the trailer. Luke Cage may be bulletproof, but the people he cares about are not.
If that wasn’t enough, the trailer also reveals a very funny moment in which Cage encounters a music legend playing himself in a cameo role.
All 13 episodes of Luke Cage will be available on Friday, September 30.
