New JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS Series Debuts Next March From IDW

They’re truly, truly outrageous, and not only are they getting a big movie debut this year, but Hasbro’s classic toy and cartoon stars Jem and the Holograms are also returning to the world of comics as well, thanks to the folks at IDW. Beginning in March 2015, Jem and the Holograms will star in their first ongoing comic book series, brought to you by the creative team of writer Kelly Thompson (Storykiller, The Girl Who Would Be King) artist Ross Campbell (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), with subscription covers by Sara Richard (My Little Pony).

This isn’t going to be an ’80s nostalgia fest, though. It looks like the folks at IDW are going to update the world and look of Jem for the 21st Century. According to the official press release, “Jerrica Benton is the gifted singer of The Holograms, a band that has the right look and the right sound… But one thing is holding them back—Jerrica’s crippling stage fright. Luckily, Jerrica is about to find help in the most unlikely of places when she discovers a forgotten present left by her father. And what she finds is truly outrageous!” OK, if the gift her dad leaves her is the computer program called Synergy that instantly turns her into a pink haired pop singer, then that’s pretty much classic Jem, but I guess the look is less New Wave/MTV and more Katy Perry/YouTube.

For you collectors out there, there will be five rainbow foil covers that will be available for the first issue, one for each member of the Holograms, by artist Amy Mebberson (My Little Pony), plus the whole band by series artist Ross Campbell, all in a deluxe rainbow foil and hologram collectible box. A second box set for the second issue will feature another set of four covers by Mebberson and a group shot by Campbell—this time starring Jem’s biggest rival band, The Misfits. The Misfits covers will, undoubtedly, have a lot more neon green and zebra print.
