New iTunes THE FORCE AWAKENS Bonus Feature Shows How Rey Got Her Look

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been available digitally and on Blu-ray since the beginning of April, but new special features are still being rolled out. iTunes has made a particularly interesting, exclusive one available to fans who purchase the movie through them. Titled “Dressing the Galaxy,” the bonus feature explores the costumes of Episode VII with its costume designer Michael Kaplan. He follows in the footsteps of the prequel trilogy costume designer Trisha Biggar and was presented with the challenge of developing the look of a completely unknown period of time in the Star Wars galaxy. No pressure, right?

The feature explores the costumes of various characters in the film, including Rey. What went into her design, how did her goggles featuring stormtrooper helmet elements come about–these questions and more are dicussed in the feature. Kaplan said Rey’s role as a scavenger informed what she’d be wearing because it had to be functional. “We knew she was going to be in a world of men doing things like climbing and dealing with rocket parts and living this Spartan life, so we had to make her practical, but we also wanted a glimmer of femininity about her. I also knew there were going to be sandstorms and dust, so I wanted the character to be in light colors. It also felt right for her emotionally and for the desert. It also felt very Star Wars especially when you look back at Luke and Leia,” he said in a press release about “Dressing the Galaxy.”

This is the sort of information costumers and behind-the-scenes nerds like me drool over. Costumes are such a key part of storytelling. I’ll happily take this bonus feature for now, but I hope we get an entire book about the costumes of the sequel trilogy one day.

Will you be purchasing The Force Awakens on iTunes so you can access this feature? Let us know in the comments.
