“Itâs like The Raid and the church scene from Kingsman: The Secret Service has a really, REALLY fâcked up baby.”
That’s what our own Rachel Heine said about the all-first-person action flick Hardcore Henry, and much to our surprise and the movie’s credit, they have (more or less) quoted her in the newest trailer.
Based on a music video by director Ilya Naishuller and funded in part on Indiegogo, Hardcore Henry (originally just called Hardcore until somebody in marketing undoubtedly pointed out the Google implications) puts you, the viewer, in the head and behind the eyeholes of a man who has been turned into a cyborg. With little memory of who he is, besides the flashes of a wife you see in the trailer, he sets out to figure out what’s going on, and who he has to kill to find out. Looking at what we see above, I reckon that answer is, “a whole lot of people.”
First-person movies have been tried before–the Danny Glover starrer Day of the Mummy kinda came and went–but not on this scale, with elaborate choreography and characters going everywhere, most of it done using practical effects and a stuntman with a GoPro playing Henry/the viewer. Spiritually, it looks like the third Crank movie we will probably never see done officially. Hell, by the time I got done watching the trailer I felt like my heart got hit with the Beijing Cocktail and a few electro-paddles.
Also, Sharlto Copley makes everything better. You know it.
Are you ready to be seated in a darkened theater…regarding Henry? Let us know in comments.
