New DOOM Video Game Hides Hellish Surprises in Its Soundtrack

The first major entry in the fan-favorite DOOM franchise to release in over 10 years comes fully loaded with secret locations, power-ups, and collectibles. The game has been well-received by critics and gamers alike, but not all its secrets are accessible through gameplay alone. For the uninitiated, DOOM is a first-person shooter, developed by iD Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, that allows players to control an unnamed marine who battles demonic forces of Hell unleashed upon the colonized planet of Mars. The franchise is well known for its intense gameplay, Hellish and Satanic imagery, and wealth of hidden objects and locations, but it turns out that even the game’s soundtrack is getting in on the fun.

Kotaku reports that DOOM composer Mick Gordon has hidden a fun little Easter egg in the track named “Cyberdemon,” which refers to one of the most formidable creatures in the game. As if the minotaur-like beast with a cybernetic leg and rocket launcher wasn’t imposing enough, it turns out that the musical accompaniment to this monstrosity comes laden with hidden pentagram and 666 imagery. These were discovered by running the track through a spectrogram, or a visual representation of the spectrum of sound frequencies.

Take a look at the hidden images embedded in DOOM’s soundtrack, captured by redditor Tomcb:

To see the discovery in action, YouTubers NERD SAUCE and Face Like The Sun have posted videos of their capture of the Easter eggs using the spectrograph:

That’s a pretty clever bonus item to add to the ever-growing list of secrets discovered in the new game, and I can only imagine that other gamers have already run the rest of the soundtrack through a spectrograph to see if anything else is hiding in the musical madness. The “intense” and “impactful” music of DOOM is a perfect companion to the game itself, but this added layer is a reminder that the Dark Lord is always watching.
