Disney has released a new trailer for their live-action Cinderella, and it’s undeniably gorgeous. The sets and costumes are rich in a way they simply can’t be with animation and the added depth makes the familiar fairy tale look different and new. However, if the trailers are telling the entire story – and they certainly seem to be – this Cinderella is a more direct adaptation of the classic animated film except with a small twist that hints the king is plotting with Cinderella’s evil stepmother. On second thought, I can understand why the trailer essentially seems like a two minute summary of the entire plot. Since it’s not fresh material, they can give the story away without spoiling it and instead pour energy into hooking us with the look of the movie (yeah, it worked) and the cast (that worked too). And here’s the thing, I don’t need the retelling to be drastically different. Maybe it makes me a sucker, but I like fairy tales and if Kenneth Branagh wants to direct a faithful retelling of the Cinderella story, I’m okay with it. I enjoy original scripts too, but hey, I can like and support both.

As mentioned, the cast is appealing. Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine? Come on. I’m also pleased to see Hayley Atwell as Cinderella’s mother and Sophie McShera (from Downton Abbey just like Lily James) as Drizella.
