This morning Sony released a new trailer for Neill Blomkamp‘s upcoming sci-fi feature Chappie, starring Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel. While the uplifting first trailer for the film focused on the relationship between Chappie the robot and his creator (played by Patel), and Chappie’s journey to becoming a thinking and living piece of artificial intelligence, the new trailer is all about war, an anti-robot agenda and bringing an end to poor little Chappie.
There is also a major switch in character attention. Hugh Jackman’s character was mostly absent from the first trailer, but here he takes center stage. Sigourney Weaver was also missing from the initial first look at the film, but here she is shown portraying the authority figure pulling the strings in the effort to bring down artificial intelligence.
Have a look at the new trailer:
Pretty RoboCop-ish, right? Blomkamp is without a doubt a visionary filmmaker (did you see the Alien 5 concept art that he released on his Instagram?), and though I am still a massive fan of his feature debut District 9, Elysium wasn’t exactly my cup of tea… What is interesting is Blomkamp’s continued exploration of human beings interacting with the “other,” a common trope in science fiction. That’s something we definitely want to see more of.
Are you all looking forward to Chappie, or did Elysium leave you with some serious trust issues? Let us know in the comments below.
Chappie, starring Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel, hits theaters on March 6, 2015.
So this is basically a remake of Short Circuit?
As soon as I saw Die Antwood appear in the trailer, I thought “NOOOOOPEE”
So it’s basically Short Circuit, but with more guns
At least Murphy was Human.. gonna pass no puff
It’s Short Circut crossed with Robo Cop. I almost expected him too say Johnny 5 is alive!
I like all his movies. He does robots better than any current filmmaker. They look realistic, and not flashy which ads to the movie’s believability.
This has probably been asked, but does Chappie look like Briareos Hecatonchires, from Appleseed, to anyone else?
First thing that popped into my head when I saw it.
