If youâre not up to date with the current episodes of Marvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there are spoilers ahead regarding the identity of Lash (Matt Willig), the Inhuman villain who made his live-action debut in the third season premiere. Donât say that you werenât warned!
Lash is a relatively new creation in Marvelâs comic book universe, and when the time came to introduce Lash on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the decision was made to reveal that Lash was someone whom fans had already met: Dr. Andrew Garner (Blair Underwood), the ex-husband of Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen).
As disclosed in the most recent episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Garner was exposed to the Inhuman terrigen and he emerged with the power to transform into Lash and a desire to kill other Inhumans. Lash may be acting out of instinct, but Garner helped his alter ego find targets and eliminate Inhumans that he/they deemed to be a threat.
Watching the Garner-to-Lash transformation on screen, itâs hard not to think of the classic transformations from Bill Bixbyâs Bruce Banner to Lou Ferrignoâs the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk TV series. Special effects have come a long way since the late â70s, but Lashâs live-action transformation is unlike anything else on TV, according to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Visual Effects Supervisor Mark Kolpack. In a newly released video, Kolpack explains how the effects team created Lashâs transformation. Underwood also shares his thoughts about what the transformation does to Garner.
While Lash appeared to be subdued at the end of last weekâs episode, donât count him out for long. Heâs likely to remain one of the main villains facing the S.H.I.E.L.D. team this season.
What do you think about the decision to make Andrew Garner into Lash? And were you impressed by the VFX behind it? Share your thoughts below!
