Netflix Wishes SENSE8 a ‘Happy Birthday,’ Orders Second Season

Within the mythos of Netflix’s original series, Sense8, the date August 8th has a special significance to the main characters. It’s the shared birthday of the sensates, eight strangers from around the world whose minds and emotions are irrevocably linked together.

To mark the occasion, Netflix officially renewed Sense8 for another season while sharing a video message from the cast in which they wished the series a “Happy Birthday.”

Sense8 was created by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) alongside the writers and directors of The Matrix films, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski. The series follows the newly interconnected lives of police officer Will Gorski (Brian J. Smith); Riley Blue (Tuppence Middleton), an Icelandic DJ in London; Capheus (Aml Ameen ), a matatu driver in Nairobi; businesswoman and underground kickboxer Sun Bak (Bae Doona); closeted Mexican actor Lito Rodriguez (Miguel Ángel Silvestre); Kala Dandekar (Tina Desai), an Indian pharmacist in Mumbai; German safecracker, Wolfgang Bogdanow (Max Riemelt); and Nomi Marks (Jamie Clayton), a transgender woman and hacktivist living in San Francisco.

Naveen Andrews (Lost) was also featured as Jonas Maliki, a Sensate from another cluster who guided the new Sensates, with Daryl Hannah as another Sensate named Angelica Turing; Doctor Who veteran, Freema Agyeman as Nomi’s wife, Amanita; and Terrence Mann as Whispers, a renegade Sensate who is out to destroy any others like him.

The production of Sense8 Season 1 was notable for its international filming locations in Chicago, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Seoul, Reykjavík, Mexico City, Nairobi, and Mumbai, as well as the series’ willingness to explore LGBT issues within a sci-fi context.

Details about the production of Sense8 Season 2 were not included in today’s announcement. Nor is there currently a timetable for Sense8’s return or the number of episodes that were ordered.
