Netflix Saves You 130 Hours a Year in Commercials

There is too much good television to watch these days. Sure, having tons of awesome shows to choose from is great, but the downside is that you can feel like you never have enough time to keep up with everything. Well, unless you are watching it on Netflix that is.

The folks over at Exstreamist ran some numbers and concluded that the popular streaming service saves the average customer 130 hours a year in missed advertisements.

How did they get that number? They based it on a survey done by TDG Research that found the average Netflix subscriber watches 1.5 hours of content a day. That equates to 540 hours a year. (Look, no one ever promised math wouldn’t be involved.) Nielsen says that in 2014 an hour of cable television averaged out to about 15 and half minutes of commercials. Put it all through a calculator and that gets you to 130 hours, or roughly five and a half days.

Think about what you could watch with five and a half free days. You could watch all of Mad Men (92 episodes), then watch all of Breaking Bad (62 episodes), and still have a little time left over to readjust your moral compass.

Or, like me, you could just waste that time going through the entire Netflix library every time you decide to watch a movie. Either way…

So what shows should be people be catching up on with all of this missed commercial time? Make some suggestions in the comments section below so we can add it to our ever-growing queue.
