Netflix Gives JESSICA JONES a Second Season

Spoilers about the first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones ahead. Read at your own peril!

For reals you guys, we’re super gonna spoil things. Do not read further if you don’t want to know what happened. Are you ready? I’m ready, are you ready? Then here we go!

For reals.

Killgrave is dead — praise the All-Father — but the Jessica Jones series lives on. Krysten Ritter‘s amazing turn as the superpowered heroine-turned-private investigator was notable for its nuance and willingness to delve into dark territory. Jessica was shown to be at once fearless and tortured by her past. The loss of her family in her teenage years bonded her to adoptive sister Patsy Walker, but didn’t give her any positive adult influences in new guardian Dorothy. Her further abuse by devious Killgrave pushed her into a life of solitude and booze, but her innate yearning to do the right thing — the noble thing — never wavered through any of it.

Imperfect as her choices and methods of dealing with trauma may be, Jessica Jones is a hell of a character, and the fact that we’ll be getting a full second season is a treat. When Netflix and Marvel‘s Daredevil proved willing to dive into much gorier fare than we’d seen in Marvel’s Phase 1 and Phase 2 movies, Jessica Jones proved that the emotional ramifications of battle, abuse, and even heroism could make for even more jarring storytelling. Where Jessica’s story will go in the second season remains to be seen, but I think it’s fair to assume that Patsy and Malcom will become further enmeshed in Jessica’s Alias Investigations.

According to Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos, we likely won’t see Marvel’s Jessica Jones season 2 until after the premiere of the upcoming The Defenders series, and scheduling the crossovers between Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Iron Fist will take a fair amount of planning that could affect its premiere date.

The second season of Marvel’s Daredevil is scheduled to premiere on March 16th.
