Neill Blomkamp’s New ALIEN Movie Officially Has Sigourney Weaver on Board, Will Ignore Last 2 Movies

Neill Blomkamp’s Alien movie, which was just a series of concept sketches posted on Instagram a few months back, has suddenly become very real. And now we are learning some details, although many of them could have been guessed from the artwork. First off, in case there were any doubt, Sigourney Weaver will indeed return as Ellen Ripley, and this movie should give proper closure to her character. Also surmised from the concept art (that included an older version of Michael Biehn’s Hicks character from Aliens), Blomkamp’s new movie will basically disregard Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection as the director says he’s designing the film to sit in sequence right after Aliens.

Will Blomkamp just pretend that the other two movies didn’t happen, similar to what Bryan Singer did with Superman III and Superman IV when he made Superman Returns? Although that movie had its fair share of issues, I don’t think anyone was upset that Richard Pryor’s character and Nuclear Man were flushed down the continuity toilet. But while just about no one loves Alien: Resurrection (even Joss Whedon, the guy who wrote it), David Fincher’s Alien 3 does have its fans out there. If anything, that movie scored some points this weekend for providing us with the basis for this excellent post-Oscars meme.

Personally, I hope they treat those two movies as the mother of all cryo-sleep nightmares. It would be weird to just not mention them at all, considering that Weaver was front and center for both, but maybe that’s the plan. Fox hasn’t given a release date yet for the movie, but I imagine we’ll be hearing a lot more about this one very soon. In the meantime, check out this video from Sky Movies where both Blomkamp and Weaver talk about Alien 5, and don’t forget to watch Jessica Chobot break down her hopes and dreams in a recent episode of Nerdist News!

  1. Chuck says:

Don’t forget the two Aliens Ripley ejected out in the first two movies, also Ripley fell into a furnace was she killed or did she survive with the Alien she had hold of? There are thoughts that could revive the older movies with the new which would give an ending and a begining.

  2. Regina Disbro says:

Among all the other things I hated about A3, I think they shouldn’t have killed off Newt and Hicks. They should bring them back as a backup alien ass-kickers to Ripley.

  3. peter says:

DID ANYONE OUT THERE READ THE DARK HORSE COMICS AND BOOKS ?????

  4. brian says:

If they are going to disregard Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection I hope the dont name the new movie Alien 5

  5. Nick Reeves says:

Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and resurrection were awesome ofcourse one and two are the best but 3 was awesome too, full of grunge and grit and showing how crap mankind can be, Ripleys death scene still brings a tear to my eye. But what ever happens no movie is worth it in this franchise without Sigourney Weaver, she is the essential business.

I loved Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection ofcourse the first two are the most awesome but alien 3 was grunge and grit I liked it and Ripleys death scene still brings a tear to my eye. But no alien movie is worth it without Sigourney Weaver she is the boss.

  7. fevertronic says:

Just because Blomkamps’ film comes after Aliens, doesn’t mean that Alien 3 and 4 will be ignored. The film could easily fit into continuity *between* Aliens and Alien3. Read his comments carefully, he does not say he intends to wipe A3 and 4 out of continuity.

  9. Diana says:

The only good thing about Alien 3 was Charles Dance (aka, Tywin Lannister).   Resurrection was a complete shit show.  I remember sitting in the theater watching and just wanting to punch someone.  I adore this francise/universe so I have high hopes for this and am very excited by the news.

  10. AlienJ says:

In my opinion the Alien movies were out of sequence, Alien 3 should have taken place prior to Aliens, the company would have surely wanted to save Ripley from Fury for the location of the Derelict ship and its cargo and it would have given Ripley a life after. Now we have to see 2 movies of the franchise get dismissed.

  11. Tango says:

Seems to be a lot of people who like Resurrection.  Count me in, too.

  12. jarod says:

Queen tales BISHOP. How’s thee top half of L.H. going to play. Or will it just be stunt legs. BISHOP meets CHAPPiE?

  13. Max says:

I am a big fan of the whole Alien Series and The Whole Predator series, furthermore I really liked the alien prequel Prometheus so doing away with any part of either of these series would tick me off!!!

  14. Jack says:

Why is everyone so excited?  If you go by the main four films, only two have univesal praise. Thats only 50% success. Its been a while since I have been in school, but I dont think 50% is very good. Why is everyone assuming that this is going to be good?  Yes, I get it, you dont like 3 or 4, but what does that have to do with anything? How is this a slam dunk?  What am I missing?

  15. Andrew says:

Those two actors were a big part of why I really didn’t like Resurrection… Different strokes, I suppose.

  16. MacWard says:

I thought each Alien film had it’s merits, they all had very talented people involved and they never jumped the shark as far as I’m concerned.

  17. Robert says:

Totally.  I mean, it was OK…

  18. yes says:

Alien Ressurection was the best in the sequence after Aliens 2

  19. Chris says:

I agree that the total negation of the first 2 movies was totally deflating. However, I think Alien 3 could have been a good movie on its own right if the suits hadn’t butchered it so badly. Certainly better than any subsequent Alien movie.  Better script and acting than Prometheus as well which had a great story but seemed created by a 10 year old.

  20. Jacob says:

Alien 3 was supposed to close the Franchise and Sigourney was on board for it. I agree the premise killed Aliens spectacular plotline so i hope the reboot goes well.

  21. Kerry says:

I completely agree, Aliens III did nothing but make me angry, after everything Ripley went through in Aliens to just kill off 2 crucial characters like that is inexcusable. Alien Resurrection was fairly weak but not as blood boiling upsetting as 3.

  22. The film “Alien 3” benefited from stellar performances by Weaver and Dutton, no doubt. And it did have an interesting “back to basics” approach as a nod to the first film. So yes, it didn’t totally suck.

But as others here said, overall it was awful because it “betrayed everything Ripley fought for in the previous two films” (as one commentator put it), particularly in the second film. It was grossly under-budgeted, and cheaply threw aside the far superior script originally crafted for it. The fans, the actors, and the characters deserved considerably better.

Moreover, I can’t emphasize enough that what was done to Hicks and Newt in the opening minutes of the film was insulting, unnecessary, and shamelessly expedient in the extreme. It was a slap in the face to the fans, and to those great characters. And what was done to Bishop was yet another slap in the face. It had its good points, but that didn’t save the movie from being a major disappointment.

I’m personally glad to see it tossed out of continuity and relegated to a “bad cryo-sleep dream.”

  23. Andy says:

Are you referring to the monster from Clom (not to be confused with Raxacoricofallapatorius)?

  24. Thunder Lord says:

Agreed, Aliens and Cameron get way more credit than they deserve and not enough credit to Dan Obannon and Robert Heinlein (and his book starship troopers). James Cameron rips off peoples work and slaps action/ Military-porn onto it.

  25. Lucy says:

    You are braindead.
    Alien > Aliens > Predator> Prometheus > Alien3 > Predator 2 > Predators > Alien: Resurrection > AVP > AVP:R.

  26. Justin says:

I keep reading how “true Alien fans” like Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Truth is I have never met anyone that enjoys this franchise as much as I do. I own every single video game ever made, and at one time owned every single Alien Franchise action figure ever made but those blew up so big that I couldn’t afford to keep up. I still have all my toys from when I was a kid. My favorite movie of all itme is Aliens, and my second favorite movie of all time is Alien. And in spite of literally hating Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection I have still purchased every single Alien box set that has come out. VHS, DVD, and Blue Ray.

There was a sciprt for Alien 3 long before the Alien 3 we have now was written. And in that script Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and Bishop were all in it and it played out on Earth. It was a kick Ass script and eventually got scrapt with all the director changes when they were trying to decide who was going to do it. True Alien fans don’t like Alien 3 for the exact reason people are saying “true fans like it all”. The only thing linking Alien 3 to the other movies is Weavers character. They threw out all that happened in the first two movies by killing everyone off. It made the second movie not matter becasue if you remember Ripley was floating in space after the first movie.

I hope this movie gets made and I hope that they do ignore 3 and resurrection. I can’t think of a worse idea in any movie than a Queen Xenomorph giving human birth. And every friend I have had watch that movie scoffs at it as well. It was a dumbass idea. Yes tha cast was great but the plot sucked.

I have actually wrote my own “Alien 5” and it opens with Ripley waking from hyperspace and telling Newt and Hicks what a horrible dream she had. (I.E. Alien 3/4). This series was supposed to end on a way better note. But Fox was literally trying to cash in on the “Alien Franchise check” and have ruined the franshise with the last 4 films. This series needs a reboot badly and that is coming from the biggest Alien fan you will ever hear an opinion from.
