Neill Blomkamp Drops Full Trailer and New Details on Oats Studios’ Experimental Shorts

Last week, director Neill Blomkamp offered up the first teaser for his experimental short films under the Oats Studios banner. Now, Blomkamp is revealing more information about his plans and a longer trailer for Oats Studios Vol. 1, which will apparently feature Sigourney Weaver in at least one of the three initial shorts.

On his Twitter account, Blomkamp explained that the first three shorts will be around 20 minutes long and that they will be free on YouTube because he wants to see if there is an audience that would be willing to pay for the second volume of short films.  On his Instagram account, Blomkamp revealed that the title of the alien invasion short is Rakka, and he also noted that one of the other shorts is an alternate timeline of the Vietnam war.

Considering that these shorts are free and coming soon, we’re very excited to see where the director of District 9, Elysium, and Chappie takes us. The option to remix these shorts also sounds enticing.

While speaking with The Verge, Blomkamp pontificated on other opportunities the independent platform might avail him and his fans. “The more I thought about that, the more it became, ‘What if the users had access to all of the 3D files that we used for the visual effects?’” he said. “If we just gave that away with any one-time purchase and you could render stuff yourself? Or what if we just give away all of the raw footage of one of the pieces, and anyone in the audience could they recut the the entire thing themselves? Stems from all of the music, or voiceovers from the actors; I just wanted to open it up and let people remix it.”
