Earlier this month, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods escaped 14 years of development hell (including an extended stop at HBO) when Starz ordered it to series. It’s long been expected that Gaiman would take an active hand in bringing his creation to television, but American Gods co-showrunner Bryan Fuller has confirmed Gaiman’s full participation.

While at the Saturn Awards this past week, Fuller said “We are cranking away. We’ve got the first two scripts written already. It’s wonderful to be working with Neil Gaiman… Neil Gaiman is going to be writing episodes of the show… It’s going to have scope, as it should.”

Gaiman’s American Gods was first published as a novel in 2001. The story lays out a growing conflict between the old Gods of mythology and a new breed of Gods born out of the modern world’s worship of technology, drugs, greed, celebrity, and other vices. The main character of the novel is an ex-con named Shadow Moon, who finds himself escorting the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday on a cross-country road trip to marshal the forces of the old Gods.

The Vertigo comic book series, Sandman is perhaps Gaiman’s most beloved work, but he has also written several novels including The Graveyard Book, Stardust, and Anansi Boys, which shared the world with American Gods.

In television, Gaiman has written Neverwhere for BBC, an episode of Babylon 5, and two episodes of Doctor Who, including the fan-favorite episode, “The Doctor’s Wife.” Gaiman has also penned screenplays for MirrorMask and Beowulf.

The American Gods TV series is being executive produced by Michael Green and Fuller, both of whom will share showrunner duties. Casting is currently underway for American Gods, but a start date for production has not yet been announced.
