Over a decade ago, Neil Gaiman‘s short story, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, brought an unexpected sci-fi twist to a tale of impossible love and human connection. Now, Gaiman is executive producing the new live-action film adaptation of his story, which is being directed for the big screen by John Cameron Mitchell. The first trailer for the film rolls the clock back 41 years, as a boy named Enn (Alex Sharp) meets a girl called Zan (Elle Fanning), who is literally not of this world.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties takes place in 1977, as Enn and Zan get to share the experience of London’s punk scene as she acclimates to his world and rebels against her fellow aliens. But it’s not going to be that easy. Zan’s people are going to want her back, and the film is setting the stage for an epic punks vs. aliens showdown with the fate of Enn and Zan, and possibly even the world, at stake.
The film also stars Nicole Kidman as Queen Boadicea, with Ruth Wilson, Matt Lucas, Alice Sanders, Natalie Lauren, Abraham Lewis, Joanna Scanlan, Elarica Gallacher, and Jessica Plummer rounding out the cast. The official poster also sets up the conflict by placing the human punks on the left, and the aliens on the right.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties will get a limited release in the United States on Friday, May 18.
