Neill Blomkamp’s CHAPPIE Trailer Offers Up a Robot Story with Heart

Do you like your sci-fi stories with a side of feel-good schmaltz? Well, then you’re in luck because Chappie looks like it will deliver one of the sweetest robot stories since Wall-E. The latest from Neill Blomkamp (District 9), Chappie follows Sharlto Copley as the titular robot who is kidnapped by street thugs (South African zef rap sensation Die Antwoord’s Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja) shortly after his creation. However, unlike other robots, Chappie is a true artificial intelligence, the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. Will Chappie mark the next step in evolution for robotics or is his seemingly gentle, sensitive demeanor a smokescreen for something far more sinister?

Not everyone is as hep to Chappie’s appearance as the Die Antwoord crew and their nebbish scientist pal played by Dev Patel, though. As we see in the trailer, he’ll endure slings, arrows, and more than a couple rounds of automatic weapon fire before his journey comes to a close. Also featured, Hugh Jackman rocking a totally bitchin’ mullet. “The problem with Artificial Intelligence is it’s way too unpredictable,” he says during the trailer, clearly keeping his business up front and his party in the back. Although even that mullet kind of pales in comparison to the majesty of this new poster.

Chappie, also starring Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, opens on March 6, 2015.
